URBAN INDIA
HEALTH SURVEY
In June '96 the Health and Nutrition magazine published a Health
Survey of 120 urban Indians (10 each from 12 cities nation wide.)
and in its conclusion remarked.
"This pilot study, mini survey, call it what
you wish, reveals a shocking state of urban health. Almost 100 %
of the respondents had some medical problem and 40 % were on daily
medication, 50 % were physically unfit, 35 % were over weight, 72
% had high levels of Stress, 50 % had multiple Cardiac Risk factors,
37 % were at risk for Cancer and 55 % at risks for AIDS."
It concluded that a larger, more representative
survey should be conducted to substantiate whether this scenario
was correct, for the larger urban community. This 1998 - 99 surveys,
conducted by PATH CLAPSCAN, a Computerized Software that assesses
Health and Lifestyle is towards that objective.
This software is currently located in the Hospitals
of several cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Ranchi,
Jamshedpur, Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Madurai, Chennai, Coimbatore
etc. and utilizes medical tests such as Blood Pressure, ECG, Cardiac
Stress Test, PFT, Blood reports, Lipid profiles etc, to quantify
the individuals risk for Cardiac problems, Cancer and AIDS. It also
uses Lifestyle, Physiological and Psychological data, to assess,
Physical Fitness, Nutrition status, Stress, Accident risk, etc.
During the period April '98 till March '99, over
15,540 persons from the various cities in India underwent the COMPUTERISED
HEALTH SCAN, and participated in this National Urban Health Survey.
75.74 % were male, 24.26 % were female, the average age of both
genders was 41 years (minimum aged 16 years and Maximum age was
76 years). The average height registered for the urban male was
5'6", female 5'1". The average urban Indian weight being
72.00 Kgs for male and 63.00 for female from this survey.

CORPORATE
HEALTH SURVEY
The wellness of corporate employees is relevant to a corporate's bottom line in two ways. Firstly, one way or another most corporates pay for the medical expenditure of their employees. Secondly, it is universally acknowledged that a healthy employee is capable of higher productivity as opposed to his sick colleague (i.e. less absenteeism, higher production per shift etc.). However since several aspects of corporate wellness comprise financial intangibles; productivity, absenteeism etc as opposed to other aspects that can be accounted for hospitalization & medication costs, experts peg improved employee wellness at affecting the bottom line by 1% of turnover. The impact of Corporate Health Care therefore is in reducing medicare costs & improving productivity & profits.
